July 31, saw the Patidar Hall, embraced with the captivating sounds of golden oldies taking patrons way back in time. Many of them sang along and clapped their hands as they enjoyed the music. Proceeds from the tickets sales went towards the purchase of grocery hampers which were distributed to needy families in the community.

The SANZAF Women’s Day Programme was held at the Baithul Quraan Centre in Ennerdale Extension 3. SANZAF’s targeted group was teens from the Vlakfontein Wiellers Farm and Ennerdale areas.There were 100 participants and the theme for the day was voicing out against abuse.

The purpose of Vythilingam’s visit was to educate learners on moral values and lay the foundation for a no-crime culture.
Learners designed posters and sculptures, and rendered musical items as well as poems to show what they have learnt and what they understand about crime.
Two learners who performed well were selected to go to the national finals for judging. They stand a chance to be finalists of the Justice pageants.
There’s 15 schools that this project is overseeing around the country.

The men gathered for prayer at these sites from about 6.30am. Eid-ul-Adhaa. Eid ul-Adhaa is an Islamic festival to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (also known as Abraham) to follow Allah’s (God’s) command to sacrifice his son Ishmael. Muslims around the world observe this event.

On Friday, September 2, Sierra Nevada Primary School celebrated Arbor Day and Spring Day. The fun-filled day had children dressed in their best summer clothes and each class took part in a tree planting ceremony.
Over that week, learners were encouraged to design posters on the importance of tress and also design a fancy summer hat. The learners did a wonderful job and were given an opportunity to display their designs during an informative assembly on the importance of Arbor Day and Spring Day. The programme had learners happily singing and dancing to the joy of Spring.

September, being Literacy Month, saw Al-Aqsa School Extension 1 hosting its first ever Literacy Day on September 21. The aim of the day was to help learners rediscover the joys of reading and remind them of its importance.
Apart from voluntarily donating a reading book to the school’s library, learners were encouraged to dress up as their favourite story book characters. This turned out to be a roaring success! Princesses, witches, wizards, pirates and a Mad Hatter or two were the order of the day. The school’s corridors were filled with excited chatter as learners tried to guess who the various characters were.

On Thursday, September 22, Flamingo Primary School, in conjunction with Heritage Day celebrations, hosted its first ever talent show at the school’s assembly area. The pupils dressed in their traditional attire and showcased their talents, entertaining the school.
A panel of judges (Mrs Z Naidu, Mr Z McLaren and Mr P Maluleke), who are also educators at the school, chose their three best performances.

On Sunday, September 18, at about 12pm, two bakkies and a Mazda collided on the Abu Baker Asvat Drive in Lenasia.
“Saaberie Chishty Ambulance was dispatched to the scene. The ‘young’ Saaberie Chishty Ambulance medics recently completed a Light Motor Vehicle Rescue (LMVR) course which enabled them to help free the victim with minimal hand tools prior to the arrival of the fire engines. The fire department assisted in cutting open the car to release the trapped victim. However, TacMed Rescue Squad (a group of volunteers from Saaberie Chishty Ambulance), must be praised for their swift response,” said a member of the Saaberie Chishty Ambulances.

The International Association for Human Values, together with Lenz Going Green and the Lenasia Soccer Academy, planted 50 trees and an extra 20 in Lenasia Tech Grounds in Lenasia Extension 6, on Saturday, September 24.
This initiative is intended to create an environmental awareness and to honour and conserve nature.

On Wednesday,September 28, representatives of the Pick n Pay School Club, ND Pick n Pay – Maponya Mall, visited Al Aqsa School in Lenasia Extension 5 to present the Hero Awards.
Among the heroes nominated, were learners who excelled academically, those who rendered selfless service to their fellow beings and others who showed concern and care towards helpless and abandoned animals in the environment.
Abdullah Sulaimaan Ravat and Muhammad Yaseen Ooni from Grade 6 were awarded for excellence in Mathematics. They excelled at school level and at cluster level in Lenasia.

The Bhajan Seva Group (BSG) was formed to provide service to the community. This NPO is fairly new and was started initially as the Bhajan group offering their services as solace to families in times of grief.
“We are not a temple organisation, but we strive to uplift the Hindu Culture in the community, especially amongst the youth as well as establish Seva projects to assist the less fortunate ,” said Pundit Deepak.
They then found that there was more that they could offer to the communities of Lenasia and Lenasia South. As a fund-raiser, in 2015 they brought the famous Flash Entertainers to the communities of Lenasia South and Midrand.
They have also been closely involved with many other local community organisations providing support and volunteering their time and services.
