Sunday, October 2, saw more than a thousand people stepping out for the Jiswa Fun Walk at the Johannesburg Zoo.
The day encompassed awareness, charity friends and family. A sense of togetherness and camaraderie filtered through the throngs, with some walking athletically and many others ambling along the route.

Christ the Saviour Anglican Church in Lenasia hosted a prayer at Lenasia’s Rose Park on October 15. The purpose of the prayer was to seek for an ending to the country’s unrest problems, among other things.
The prayers were convened by coordinator Roseline Joseph and Father Mpho Mohale followed her.

Karatekas from the Mohan Hira Karate Centre (MHKC) had local and international exposure, all in one month and some of them, including Shihan Mohan Hira, went on to bag some fine medals.
Shihan Hira bagged One Silver and a Bronze in Kata and Weapons respectively, in their trip to Spain, earlier this month.

In a bid to raise funds for the underprivileged, Mohan Hira undertook a 70-hour dry fast on November 5. Hira (aged 78) spent his fasting hours at Trade Route Mall in full view of the community. He slept at the Mall, praying at specific times throughout the day. In conjunction with Trade Route Mall and Gift of the Givers, Hira will donate all proceeds to the Helen Joseph Hospital.

On Sunday, November 6, Celeb Kidz Speech and Drama hosted their annual graduation at the Lenasia South Civic Centre. It was a successful event where 300 kids performed and graduated in full view of 600 parents. Students came from Ridgeway Muslim School, Nurul Islam, Kiddies Campus, Al Aqsa, Ferreira, Johannesburg Muslim School, Lenasia Muslim School, Park Primary School, and Apax School of Excellence.

Transvaal United Patidar Society (TUPS) presented Bollywood Dhamaka with a live concert by Anita Pandit accompanied by eleven finest musicians and singers from Gujarat on Saturday, November 5 at the Patidar Hall in Lenasia.
TUPS partnered with Rising Sun, Zee TV and Lenz FM to make the night a success.

Mahatma Gandhi is a hero to many. He fought injustice in this country and will forever be cherished for his good deeds to humanity.
On Tuesday, November 15, the Johannesburg Consulate General of India, Dr Srinivasa and Consul General, Alok Pandey, visited Tolstoy Farm, situated opposite the Lawley informal settlement, to inspect the development of the historical site as part of a project to honour the hero.

October 2 saw the Maleeha Layla School for Special Needs bring Disney Land to Lenasia during their Sixth Annual Concert. The concert with a Disney theme, was held at the Baitun Noor hall in Extension 5. 20 special needs children from the school participated in the concert, bringing different performances to the stage and wowing the audience.
Items such as Under the sea, Cat in the hat, Beauty and the beast, Teletubbies and The 99 names of Allah were presented on stage. A surprise visit from Barney was also on the cards for the audience.

Accoding to health authorities, 284 bundles of joy were delivered in Gauteng on January 1.
According to the department, the first baby born in Gauteng on New Year’s Day was delivered at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital at 12:01 on Sunday morning.
By Sunday afternoon, the hospital had already delivered 30 babies, of which there were one set of twins and one set of triplets.
Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu said, of the 284 babies, 131 were girls and 153 were boys.
Ahmed Kathrada Hospital saw the birth of 3 babies.

The much anticipated hilarious new comedy, keeping up with the Kandasamys was officially launched at Cedar Square on February 23.
Hunderds of people braced the rainy weather to see their favourite actors.
Most of the cast members were present to answer a few questions posed to them by their fans and reporters before they headed to Room 4 at the Ster-Kinekor cinema where the comedy was screened.

Project Distinction held its annual awards evening at the Park Primary School hall on Saturday, February 18.
With the hall packed to capacity, the highly successful evening saw the Class of 2016’s top achievers walk away with bursaries and prizes.
This year, schools from Lenasia and Benoni, were part of Project Distincton.
